Women at Work: The Serving Woman

Bible Reading: Acts 9:36–42

...this woman was abounding with deeds of kindness and charity which she continually did. Acts 9:36b (NASV)

That Dorcas has endeared herself to women in the Christian church for centuries is demonstrated by the fact that so many ladies’ societies have named themselves after her and that for good reason.

These societies, like Dorcas, want to serve.

What a sight it must have been to see the weeping widows hold up to Peter the garments which Dorcas had made. These garments spoke volumes. They told of a woman who took Jesus seriously when He said, “I was naked and you did clothe Me.” They told of a woman who did not serve the Lord in her spare time, but rather devoted herself to her labor of love. They told of a woman who did good works out of love for Christ. This passage tells us she was a disciple.

Communion of the saints is a doctrine we often talk about, but doing it is quite a different matter. Communion of the saints is best expressed in deeds—a kind word, a handclasp, a phone call, a visit, a meal, a letter of encouragement or comfort. The list is inexhaustible. Dorcas not only thought good deeds. She did them.

the lesson is obvious. Use the gift you have. If that gift is sewing—sew for the Lord; if singing—sing for the Lord; if cooking—cook for the Lord; is speaking—speak for the Lord; if writing—write for the Lord. Many Christians have a number of gifts. Invest them in God’s Kingdom for time and for eternity.
